To become a church, a community of believers, a fellowship (Koinonia) in Jesus, is the work of the Holy Spirit. Our Lady was at the birth of the Church, on the first Pentecost, and she deliberately leads us to that Upper Room experience: the outpouring of the Holy Spirit through his manifold gifts. These gifts will transform not only the parish of Medjugorje, but all of us who open our hearts to the Holy Spirit.
What are these gifts? We may think of the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit (Isaiah 11:1-2), needed to build up our personal Christian life, and, especially, we may think of the 'ministerial' gifts of the Holy Spirit, needed to build up the Church, the Body of Christ (Cf. Lumen Gentium, No. 12). St. Paul lists these gifts in several of his letters. This list, however, is not an exclusive one. The Holy Spirit guides the Church through the ages which may present new tasks and challenges which in turn require special gifts of the Holy Spirit fort the Church to fulfill her mission. Can you think what special gift you should pray for in your present state of life?
Our Blessed Lady also mentions a very important aspect of being favoured by the gifts of the Holy Spirit: praising and thanking God for them. Every day we should join Our Lady by making her prayer of praise, the Magnificat, our own.
