...In this second phase Our Blessed Mother leads all of us to the Holy Spirit in whose power the works of salvation can be realised. She knows from experience what the power of the Holy Spirit could achieve in her, and so she wants us, too, to experience the gifts of the Holy Spirit. For the sake of clarity, this section is divided into three parts. We can see how the Thursday Messages are inter-linked, leading us step by step.
The first three messages are renewing Our Lady's attempt to establish a close relationship with the faithful at Medjugorje. This followed a near-crisis towards the end of the first phase because of the people's lukewarm attitude and lack of response to her unique undertaking in wishing to lead the parish of Medjugorje on the path of spiritual renewal--for the good of the whole Church. To achieve this, it was essential that the faithful should trust her completely, joining with her on a 'pilgrimage of faith,' praying with her, accepting her motherly guidance with the love of a child. Once this happy relationship had been established, she could lead them and us to the source of Divine Power, the Holy Spirit from whom she herself received the greatest gift: Divine Motherhood (Cf. Luke 1:35).
Our Lady wanted to establish an 'Upper Room Community' where the faithful are gathered round the table of the Lord (Acts 2:46), united with Jesus in celebrating the Holy Eucharist, and also, united with our Blessed Mother as the disciples after the Ascension of Our Lord, "praying unceasingly together" for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:14).
The second part, therefore, contains messages, given at the time of the Novena before the Feast of Pentecost, in which Our Lady urges us to open our hearts to the Holy Spirit asking for gifts without which we can not advance in our spiritual life.
In the third part, Our Lady teaches us how to live the gift of prayer.
